We stock and install Genie-compatible lift cables and cable drums across West Palm Beach, and a full cable-and-drum replacement typically runs $130 – $250 installed, with most jobs completed same-day. That price includes both parts, labor, a written quote before we touch anything, and our 365-day guarantee. The way most homeowners find out this part has failed is the door starts tilting to one side mid-lift, makes a sharp metallic pop, and then jams crooked in the tracks. If that sounds like your Genie door this week, here’s exactly what’s happening and what it takes to fix it right.
Which Genie Models This Applies To
Genie has used several cable drum designs over the years, and the wrong drum will chew through a new cable in weeks even if it physically fits. The older screw-drive lines, IntelliG and TriloG, and the Pro Series belt-drive models all have slightly different drum geometry, and we match by measuring the drum diameter, cable groove depth, and the cable’s length and diameter rather than trusting the model badge alone. A ReliaG 850 from 2014 and a newer 2128 chain drive do not share the same drum, even though both say Genie on the cover. If you can look at the motor head rail or the sticker on the door jamb, the model number is usually printed there, and that gets us most of the way before we even arrive. For Genie specifically, we lean toward OEM or OEM-spec aftermarket drums with the correct tapered groove pitch because the cable needs to stack cleanly without overlapping, especially on doors that cycle multiple times a day.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- Door tilts or rises unevenly. One cable has stretched or started fraying, so one side is lifting more than the other and the door is twisting in the track. Left alone, the bottom panel starts bending.
- Visible fraying or broken strands near the bottom bracket. This is where West Palm Beach humidity gets to steel cable. The bottom loop takes on salt air and condensation, and you’ll see whiskers of wire before the full snap.
- Loud pop followed by a door jammed at an angle. That’s the cable snapping under tension. The door is now dead weight and uneven, and continuing to run the opener will bend the track.
- Cable has jumped the drum and is wound around the shaft. The drum may be worn smooth or the cable tension was never set right. Either way, the cable is now binding instead of spooling.
- Door stops 8 to 12 inches from the floor when closing. Usually means the cable has slipped through the drum and is now too short on one side, tripping the safety system. The door thinks something is in the way.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In West Palm Beach, expect $130 – $250 for a complete Genie cable and drum replacement on a standard 7-foot residential door, and $150 – $600 if the imbalance has also trashed the rollers or tweaked the track and those need attention at the same time. The lower end covers a single cable and drum pair on a door that’s otherwise healthy. The upper end covers both sides, aftermarket to OEM drum upgrades, and correcting cable length on a door that was never properly tensioned. Every job includes the written price before we start, the labor, and our 365-day guarantee on parts and workmanship. We don’t quote one number over the phone and hand you a different invoice at the end. The number we put in writing is the number you pay.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check for visible fraying, rust at the bottom loop, and whether the drum looks scored or polished smooth. You can also lubricate the hinges and rollers while you’re looking, because that’s just maintenance. What you should not do is unhook a Genie cable that still has spring tension on it. These cables run alongside torsion springs, and even when the door is fully open, residual tension can whip a cable or spinning drum with enough force to break fingers or worse. The most common DIY fail we see in West Palm Beach is someone releasing tension unevenly, the drum spins, and the door comes down on a car hood or a person. If the drum is walking side to side on the shaft or the cable has already snapped, call us at (728) 220-0705 and let Aaron Teague and the crew handle it. We carry the drums and cables on the truck.
FAQs
With regular use, expect 7 to 10 years out of Genie cables in this climate, but coastal air and summer humidity can shorten that to 5 or 6 years if the door faces east and gets morning salt exposure. Drums themselves usually outlast two sets of cables unless a broken cable gouged the groove. Call (728) 220-0705 and we’ll tell you over the phone if yours are likely original.
We replace cables; we don’t splice or patch them. Once steel cable shows fraying or kinking, the strand integrity is gone and a patch is a failure waiting to happen under spring tension. The good news is a new Genie-compatible cable is typically installed in under an hour. Call (728) 220-0705 for a written quote before we start.
Most Genie cable and drum replacements in West Palm Beach take 45 to 90 minutes on site, assuming the door isn’t badly out of square and the springs are still healthy. We carry a range of Genie-compatible drums and cable lengths on the truck, so there’s usually no second trip. Call (728) 220-0705 and we’ll give you a straight answer on timing.
We stock Genie-compatible drums and cables for the common IntelliG, TriloG, and Pro Series models, along with parts for LiftMaster and Chamberlain doors, right on our trucks. If you’ve got an oddball drum size or a specialty low-headroom model, we may need 24 to 48 hours to source it. Call (728) 220-0705 with the model number and we’ll confirm before anyone rolls out.
The price we quote in writing before work begins is the price you pay, period. The only way it changes is if we find a second problem while working and you approve the additional work first, in writing. No surprise line items. Call (728) 220-0705 for a free estimate.
